In this sequel to "A Better Man" the story of Halfway House continues with the introduction of the first resident. And the series gets much better.Cameron is a convicted murderer and after ten years is released to the halfway house. Issues dealing with his conviction surface when his case file is read by Matt and Julian, but they are there to support him and help him re-integrate into society. Through friends, Cameron finds work in a local sandwich and bakery shop. Here he meets Hunter, a prosecuting attorney and there is immediate chemistry.
And thus begins the story of the first resident of the house.and here is where this book really takes off and becomes a romantic crime thriller. There is so much going on in this entry to the series that it barely resembles the first. There are hoodlums, threats of and actual violence, bad guys, good guys, crooked judges, and a well written action romance. This is a real trip!
If the rest of this series is as good as the book, then hold on for a great ride!

A Hunted Man The Men of Halfway House Book 2 edition by Jaime Reese Romance eBooks Reviews
My Review
This was such a good book. I truly loved Cam and Hunter together. Constantly while I was reading this book, I would catch myself with a grin on my face because I flat-out enjoyed their banter and relationship. The story isn't an easy one...in fact it's very emotional and heartbreaking, but I couldn't believe how much I smiled throughout the book because the characters were just so fun, despite the heaviness of the plot. And that's why they worked so well together too...this is some heavy stuff happening to both of them, but when they are together, it's easier...lighter. LOVE that!
So the guys...Cam is a 27-28 yo ex-con who just got out of prison for serving 10 years for manslaughter...something that never should have happened to him. Hunter is the Asst. DA who has just gone over his 40th birthday. So not only do they have career road-blocks, but this is a bit of a May/Dec romance too. It all worked though and worked so well. Note I love the fact that Hunter never once saw the fact that Cam is an ex-con as a reason to halt their relationship. That's such an easy conflict and I love that the author didn't utilize it. I love that she went so much deeper.
There is a HUGE overall mystery/suspense story line here in this small town that has been happening since before Cam went to jail. Hunter is in the middle of it just as his job, although he doesn't realize what's happening for a long time. It's only when Cam's name crosses his desk (after they've already been seeing each other) that he begins to truly see the depth of the intrigue. This was a complexly woven story line and I loved how the author gave us little teeny tiny threads to follow. So many of the twists took me by surprise and I truly had no idea where things were going to lead. I admit that at about 50-55% into the book, I began to get nervous about how all this would impact Cam. Great suspense here. I wanted to stop reading just because I didn't want it to go bad, but I couldn't...I had to know what happened.
Everything about Cam and Hunter worked for me. I liked them together and how they work even with the age difference and the experience difference. I liked that Cam never held back with Hunter. He was never shy simply because the guy turned him on so much. Those scenes were incredibly hot and I could definitely feel the chemistry between them jumping off the page.
There was so much about this book I loved
*Hunter's dad...and their conversations which made me laugh
*The couple that own the diner and how they took Cam under their wing and trusted him from the get-go giving him confidence to live again.
*Matt & Julian from book #1...love seeing the halfway house grow into their dream
*Cam's latte art and how much pleasure he got from making it. That scene with Hunter with the first art made me laugh out loud.
*Cole and his obsession about cars. Another character who kept me smiling.
*Aidan & Jessie...Hunter's a good guy and the guys he chooses to work with are that way too. I liked both of these characters.
*Sunrise significance...sigh. So sweet...and yet, *sob* (Have I mentioned this before...this is just a good book!)
Like I said, it was a great book. I think it was even better than the first, which I enjoyed too. I'm looking forward to seeing what else Jaime Reese does with this series.
Book 2 in "The Men of Halfway House" series.
Cameron Pierce is the first guest to The Halfway House. Recently released from a 10-year sentence on a murder charge. Cameron takes a job in a local diner trying to readjust to living in a world he no longer knows.
Hunter Donovan is an Assistant State Attorney who is a regular customer to the diner with a slight addition to the cookies. Hunter has always put his career first but with his birthday approaching, he also is realizing, he is alone.
Chemistry is off the charts between Cam and Hunter from the moment they see each other.
I loved the first book of this series and was excited to see that the story would continue for "The Men of Halfway House", I jumped with joy. The story line and connections between the characters is amazing. Jaime Reese is the master with plot twist and turns, keeping you interested from the first sentence to the last.
