The Lost Prince The Iron Fey Julie Kagawa Books
Let's face it - Julie Kagawa is one of the best storytellers in the YA world right now. She somehow balances character development and world building while giving us an action and emotion packed story. Anger, love, friendship, heartbreak and laughter are all within the pages of her novels. Her Iron Fey series included some of my favorite reading moments last year. The Lost Prince - Call of the Forgotten #1 is set in the Iron Fey world but focuses primarily on Ethan Chase, the brother of the Iron Queen, Meghan. If you remember from the earlier series, Ethan has always had the sight (ability to see the fey) and was kidnapped by them at a young age. Meghan's story started with her quest to save him. Ethan has become a loner and avoids the fey at all cost. He is also pretty bitter about Meghan's absence in their lives now that she lives in the Iron Realm.
The bad news for Ethan is that they fey haven't forgotten about him and he is drawn back into their world when he discovers a half-breed friend is missing. Ethan's fight to find and save his friend takes him on a dangerous path and, once again, forces him to face that he isn't "normal".
I thoroughly enjoyed The Lost Prince. At first I wasn't sure that Ethan is as strong a protagonist as Meghan and honestly, I'm still not 100% convinced. BUT - through the story, you do start to understand the struggle he has had for a normal life while dealing with the loss of his sister. His anger with Ash (for taking her away, at least in his mind) was palpable. Kenzie, Ethan's love interest, is someone I want to know even more. She has a complex life and it will be interesting to see where JK takes her.
Now onto some minor spoilers so I can have a little fun discussing my favorite parts:
- We do get a minor update on Meghan and Ash. They are still living as husband and wife in the Iron Realm. And....
- They have a son, Keirran. Ethan not only learns that he has a nephew but because of the way time works in Nevernever, Keirran is his age (while Meghan and Ash still look like teenagers themselves as they are basically immortal.) Keirran has a lot of power. He is part human, part Iron Fey and part Winter Fey (from his father). This power and the prophecy about his future makes everyone nervous. While no one tells Ethan their concerns, he does pick up on it during his time in the Nevernever. For some reason, Meghan wanted to keep Keirran and Ethan apart.....
Keirran was my favorite character in The Lost Prince and I'm glad to see more of him coming in The Iron Traitor. But, I just know JK is going to break my heart. The blossoming friendship between Ethan and Keirran combined with the 'unknown' prophecy makes me a very nervous reader. And, Kenzie has a lot to overcome as well to get to a potential HEA.
4.5/5 stars. A wonderful start to the series but I had to hold out an extra 1/2 star as Julie Kagawa always hits her storytelling stride with the 2nd book (which I have already started by the way - oh, the feels!)

The Lost Prince The Iron Fey Julie Kagawa Books Reviews
After thoroughly enjoying the Iron Fey series I was excited to jump into a whole new generation of stories from the world Julie Kagawa created. I love the writing style that the author uses it is a great blend of description for the world she has created with individual personalities of all the players involved.
Ethan is now 16 and man does he have a chip on his shoulder when it comes to the Fae, Ash, Meghan or people in general. He spends so much time in the book brooding and being a general party pooper that I wondered if he was ever going to become likeable. Don't worry he will eventually get over himself with the help of Kenzie who accidentally gets dragged into the adventure. I love Kenzie from the beginning, she seems to get that there is something more going on with Ethan and calls him on all of his crap.
-- "Tough guy, if brooding was a sport, you'd have gold medals with scowling faces lining the walls of your room."
Kenzie is another strong female character in the series. I love that in the Iron Fey series Julie Kagawa has made some very strong female characters that don't just wait to be rescued but run off into the adventure for themselves. They don't need a man to protect them and just because they have feelings for a boy they never rely solely on that and give everything else up. Kenzie is no different, she heads into the adventure head on and while she has a few reasons and secrets of her own she is fiercely loyal to her friends and makes a few sacrifices along the way to be able to help them.
-- "But there are things I want to do before I die, a whole list that I know I probably won't get to, but I'm sure as hell going to try."
There are few characters popping in from the original Iron Fey series but they don't get a lot of page time. I loved seeing how the Iron Realm has changed over the years since Meghan has become Queen and the few pages of her and Ash together weren't quite enough for me but I was happy to get to see them again. The other new main player is Ash and Meghan's troublesome son Kierran who is in love with an exiled girl from the Summer Court. It is ironic that their son would have the same sort of forbidden romance that caused Meghan and Ash so much trouble. It is clear early on that Ash will do anything for this girl, like father like son I suppose.
-- "As Annwyl turned away, Keirran rose swiftly, not touching her but very close. "I'm not afraid of exile," he said quietly, and the Summer girl closed her eyes. "And I don't care what the courts say. My own parents defied those laws, and look where they are now." His hand rose, gently brushing her braid, causing several butterflies to flit skyward. "I would do the same for you, if you just gave me the chance-"
There is a new rival to the Nevernever as a ghost like Fey start to take the halfbreeds and exiles from the real world. Ethan and Kenzie get pulled in when a halfbreed they know is abducted. Ethan is thrust back into Faery and will need Kierran's help to find the new leader of the ghostlike fey. But it seems that Ethan with have to deal with a few of his prejudices and team up with a few new friends to be able to find his abducted friend and help save his sisters realm.
It took a little time to get into the new characters and the new storyline, mostly because it took some time to get used to Ethan and his broodiness but I really liked him as a character so much more by the end of the story and I can see that Kierran is going to be a handful in the future of this story. It will be interesting to see how both romances work out along the way. Another solid fantasy from Julie Kagawa.
