Enthusiasm is an adorable book. I don't know how else to describe it. It is a young adult romance but even adults will enjoy this uncomplicated and sweet story. Julie is 15 and about to start her Sophomore year of high school. It is her friend Ashleigh who is the Enthusiast. When Ashleigh finds her new "thing," she enters it heart and soul. This has included things from candy making, reptiles, favorite rock bands, the Little House books, and now Pride and Prejudice. Now Julie's friend will only wear long skirts and speaks in the archaic language of Georgian England. She has even devised a plan for the two of them to crash the fall dance at the local all boys private school to find their Darcys. In the process, they do meet two nice boys - one of which is Julie's Mysterious Stranger who she had seen around town all summer. By the end of the night, Julie is swept away by him, and the next morning she finds out that her friend, Ashleigh, has found her Darcy. But then Julie finds out that he is her Darcy, Charles Grandison Parr. So, now Julie is bound to keep her mouth closed as loyalty to Ashleigh. As the story progresses, the girls are thrown into the path of the boys even more as they become involved in a play, which the two young men wrote the songs and lyrics for, at the all boys school. Julie plays it cool with Parr because of her predicament even when to the reader it is apparent that Parr is definitely into her not Ashleigh. This is a book of comedy as well as romance and of course includes teen issues of family, friendship, and first loves. It was very well written and interesting especially finding all the Jane Austen and other literary references. The author has depicted teen age relationships extremely well. And her poetry is terrific. (Parr is a poet). And I found myself really starting to feel everything that the heroine of the story was going through. As Parr would walk into the coffee shop she was patronizing, my heartbeat sped up just like the Julie's. It is a clean, sweet story that I would recommend for pre-teen girls and up.

While it may be the kiss of death to admit that I am a 40 year old parent, I just had to say that this is a wonderful book. As a Jane Austen fan, I was pleased by the author's homage to Pride and Prejudice. But more importantly, as a parent of a pre-teen, I am so glad to see a book about literate, happy, well-adjusted teens who are kind to each other and their families. A wonderful first novel, and I can't wait for the next one!
This has always been one of my favorite books. It's entertaining and, while not quite what one would normally encounter in real life, at least more believable than those romance novels where the two protagonists meet and fall in love in a matter of days. Polly Shulman has stretched this out over a more realistic several months and fills the space between with amusing anecdotes and the compelling voice of Julie Lefkowitz. For several years now, I checked this out whenever I found it in the library, and I recently decided to add it to my personal library. It was a very wise decision and I do not regret it.
As an adult, people find it strange I read YA, but Polly Shulman is a wonderful author and this boom another great read. I LOVED the Grimm Legacy and that it why I have this a shot. I will consider reading all her books on just her name alone.
What a delightful read! The characters are thoroughly likable and their adventures engaging, making it a very fast read. There's lots of fun along the way. Some of the plot was predictable, but it didn't detract from the adventure.
I hope the author will write many more books, including more about these characters.
I think it helps to have read Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" first, or at least to have seen one of the movie versions (but read the book, too!).
We can all be enthusiasts! Be passionate about your dreams and delights! Enjoy!
3 out of 5 stars! The way it's written .. it was like reading Julie's diary. Very clever! To be 16 again .... I think I just might like it if I had Julie's life. *hahaa* I definitely recommend reading it if your into chic lit!

I am prejudiced in favor of this author since I attended high school with her and we worked together on the alternate literary magazine she founded. I was pleased to read the same creative, believable and insightful voice I remembered from that time -- despite her youth. I despaired of matching her creative writing skills and it is wonderful to read a full-length published novel with her talent. I was thrilled to read echoes of our high school experience, tweaked to appeal to modern teenagers. I loved the happy ending despite the believable throes of adolescent angst. Finally, I gave it to my own teenaged daughter and she enjoyed it as well.
I first read this book when I was 16 or 17 years old, and I'm writing this review now as an almost 23 year old. I loved Enthusiasm then for its genuine characters, friendships, innocent romances, awkward relationships, and the uncanny use of Jane Austen. I read it first after checking it out at my local library and, even after returning it, remembered it as one of my favorites. A couple of years went by and I couldn't remember the name of the book, so from time to time I'd think of it and do random searches to try to figure out the title or author. At last, one day last year, it came to me Enthusiasm! So I bought the e-book and have since read it multiple times. It's simple, it's sweet, it's loyalty, it's every girl pining after her crush and not knowing what to do about it. Even as an adult, I recommend it to my fellow avid readers.
