I first read this way back when it was released. I loved it then and I still do now. Now, reading it after a longish break (I've read it at least four times) I do notice some aging - lack of cell phones, disks for computers etc, but it in no way detracts from the essential greatness of the storyline and excitement of the writing. I've read a lot, in fact almost all, of Dean Koontz's books. Many of them are fantastic reads, but this one will always be not only my favourite of his, but my favourite book of all.Tags : Lightning [Dean Koontz] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz’s brilliantly thrilling novel of suspense. In the midst of a raging blizzard,Dean Koontz,Lightning,Berkley,0425192032,Short Stories (single author),Guardian angels,Horror fiction,Suspense fiction,Thrillers (Fiction),Time travel,FICTION Horror,FICTION Science Fiction Time Travel,FICTION Short Stories (single author),FICTION Thrillers Suspense,FICTION Women,Fiction,Fiction - Horror,Fiction-Suspense,Horror & ghost stories,Horror - General,MASS MARKET,time travel fiction;fantasy books for adults;lightning dean koontz;sci fi gifts;book lovers gifts;geek gifts;dean koontz;dean koontz lightning;dean koontz books;world war 2 books;world war 2;world war ii;science fiction books;mystery thriller suspense;sci fi books;time travel books;science fiction and fantasy;thriller books;suspense;thrillers;thriller;science fiction;time travel;contemporary;female protagonist;fantasy;mystery;romance;love;dating and relationships;Nazis;WWII;supernatural;ghosts, suspense; thrillers; thriller; science fiction; time travel; contemporary; female protagonist; fantasy; mystery; romance; love; dating and relationships; Nazis; WWII; supernatural; ghosts; world war II; time travel fiction; fantasy books for adults; lightning dean koontz; sci fi gifts; book lovers gifts; geek gifts; dean koontz; dean koontz lightning; dean koontz books; world war 2 books; world war 2; science fiction books; mystery thriller suspense; sci fi books; time travel books; science fiction and fantasy; thriller books
Lightning Dean Koontz 9780425192030 Books Reviews
When I was twelve years old, and I faithfully purchased his softcover and hardcover every chance I got and then promptly shared them with anyone who liked to read. Thanks to my kindle I'm rediscovering books I read so long ago, knowing that Koontz books are full of wonderful stories written so well that they feel like visiting old friends who never disappoint you.
Dean Koontz is one of my favorite writers. He goes from funny to heartbreaking in a few sentences. Lighting is one of his best and I have re-read it multiple times and will no doubt continue to do so over time. I am slowly accumulating his books on my with eager anticipation of hours of delight.
Lightning has to be one of my favorite Koontz works (other than Phantoms, Watchers, and the Frankenstein series). Again, in the mid to late eighties, Koontz began to use other genres in his thrillers, and this one has romance as the secondary genre. I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but after reading Servants of Twilight, I figured I'll give Lightning a try.
The story deals a lot of darkeness of humans, as you will know Stefan, Laura's angel really is! And alos is the book about the dark forces of nature and time, and what Stefan must prevant these dark humans are about to do with some kind of dark power.
The book really has good characters. But I do agree that Koontz makes his children talk more like adults, but I've read worse dialouge. Koontz really does give you some surprises, really at the climax. Lightning is a must read of any Koontz fans who haven't or thinking about picking this book up and read (or upload it through your kindle).
The first book I read of yours was the Watchers and I loved it and the dog and felt very sorry for the other. I kept reading mad that stuff like that is probably going on. But I also enjoyed your Odd Thomas series so continue to write all kinds of books because I am not a sheep. I even keep The Watchers on my kindle so I can re-read it when I please. If I give a book as a gift I buy one of two. Either the Watchers or Swans Song my two favorite books. Keep writing and I will keep reading. Thanks
This book has to be a new favorite of mine. I never thought I would read any Dean Koontz books, but after this one encounter with this man's work, I am inclined to disagree with my prior judgement of him as an author. This book was so completely NOT what I was expecting. I don't know WHAT I was expecting but, I was pleasantly surprised. I am sold on Dean Koontz. I will be reading more of this authors work. Very good story line. Excellent and believable characters...I thought at one point I was going to be disappointed in the book, but then he turned it around and made it good.....highly recommend if you have never read one of his books, this is a great way to check this author out.
Why is Laura Shane so special? It seems when Laura Shane is in trouble a mysterious stranger arrives to save her even from her delivery. She has a rough childhood, but for some reason her "guardian" keeps showing up. Is he an angel? And why is there lightning in the sky whenever he shows up?
Dean Koontz again shows his mastery of his unique category of fiction. This time the protagonist is a woman and there is no dog in this one. His perspective is always fresh and exciting. Suspenseful and exciting this book is recommended for Koontz fans and those who want to give his work a try.
I first encountered Dean Koontz's work with his Odd Thomas series and I really enjoyed those. Lightning has some of the same characteristics of that series namely, great characterization, tight, fast-paced plotting, edge-of-your-seat tension and thankfully, a HEA. In fact, the tension was frequently such that I had to put the book down for a bit to catch my breath. Even if there was the death of a character that I really liked, this book was everything I like about this genre.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD...
Now, about that thinking cap there is an aspect of this book that made me think from time-to-time, that I should be taking notes and that aspect is time travel and the mechanics that make it happen according to this author. I'll be honest, I had to reread a couple of sections just to make sure I understood it. I don't mention this as a criticism, I see it as a wonderful element of a really enjoyable book. I'd rather have to do a little rereading to understand than just breezing through something resembling literary fluff.
On another note, I read the author's afterword at the end of the book. I appreciated the insight he provided into the writer's world and the kind of against-the-grain efforts he often had to make to publish the kinds of books that please both him and his readers.
Bottom line I don't give 5-star ratings easily but I found this book worth every point on every one of those five stars. Laura, Thelma, Danny, Chris, and Stefan are all characters that I came to care about and I appreciate Mr. Koontz's work in creating them. Mr. Koontz, if you read reviews, know that I appreciate your tenacity in sticking to your guns to write the kind of books you like to write.
